Naked Run 18: Point Reyes National Seashore

I think I discovered my Portugal-replacement naked running spot!

How exciting.

After seven months of living in beautiful San Francisco, Marshall’s Beach has simply not been what I had hoped. Difficult access without a car, a rocky shoreline often covered by the tide and a very short 250 meter stretch of running distance. And, of course, the fog.

On a weekend retreat day trip to Kehoe Beach, I discovered what I had really been waiting for.

Kehoe Beach is not listed on any naturist nude beach lists. And, as a National Seashore, it is probably not permitted, anyway. But with a beach length approaching 10km any only one or perhaps two access points, it turned out to be perfect.

During the lunch break of the workshop at the beach I took off for a run clad solely in my shorts. The workshop participants had no idea what I was intending. Or what I achieved.

It was a warm fogless Sunday and for October, the beach was probably as busy as it could possible get. As typical, everyone was crowded around the path to the carpark (the 15 minute walk from the parking area to the beach probably keeps the numbers of visitors down).

After only a minute or two of running barefoot at the sweetspot where the ocean waves had previously dampened the sand, I passed the final bathers. Sure enough, with over 500m between them and the sparse ‘crowd’, the couple sunbathing there were naked.

After another minute, when I had reached a safe distance I shed my shorts and continued naked.

This stretch of beach is flat, soft sand with a very wide beach. Between these conditions and the geography of Point Reyes National Seashore, I couldn’t resist the comparisons to Meco Beach in Portugal. I really could have run a very long way.

But I didn’t have the time: I only had a short break for lunch and had to return too soon to the afternoon portion of the workshop.

After approximately 2km, I turned around and headed back.

It is a spectacular spot with perfect conditions. Sadly it is too far to visit regularly, especially given the total absence of public transport. Nevertheless, I know I’ll be back.
